What is CHIP? CHIP is an acronym for Children’s Health Insurance program, what is a state run health insurance plan for children. Similar to medicaid (and run by the same office: The Department of Workforce Services) CHIP is another option for families who do not have health insurance and can’t afford it for their kids.

If you have applied through the Federal Facilitated Marketplace (healthcare.gov) and at the end of your application saw your children were sent to CHIP, do not panic–the state is now helping you with an affordable health insurance product.

Qualifications for CHIP
– Under age 19
– Do not have health coverage currently
– Must be a US Citizen or legal resident
